SPORTING.

RACING. TURF NOTES. (By Zetland). The winning form displayed by Te Aiai at the Gisborne meeting whete he won the Steeplechase and Hurdles, will bring him into prominence for the Wellington meeting. For the Grand National Steeplechase he is nearly as gocd a favourite as Audax. Backers naturally like to support winning form, b.it it must not be forgotten that for races like the Nationals there are always certain horses being reserved, the prize money being large enough to tempt owners to wait in order to secure big wins. n Paiscno, winner of a hurdle race at Gisborne, is consequent on the withdrawal of Wimmera, favourite for the Grand National Hurdles. Good judges who have seen him jumping consider the Strowan gelding a better hurdler than Wimmera, and if this be so his position as favourite is justified.

W, G«rrett has Afterthought in good winter condition. The Merriwee mare can easily be prepared for early spring racing. The Taratahi trained Te Utuatu, who is engaged in the Trial Plate at Trentham, was given a run at the Wair»rapa Hunt Clubfeet on Thursday last. Included in the entries for the same race are New Cup candidates in Tawhaki, Ukraine and Morecombe. The Wanganui-owned N.Z. Cup candidates, Rooseveit and John, have been put into work to undergo their preparations ior the big event.' Both are reported to be sound and in good condition. A few days ago the Awapunitrained Boanerges fell on the road and cu't his knees. As the accident may throw him back in his preparation it is probable that Nyland may now be Mr Highden's Winter Cup candidate.
