The trial of Alexander Dickman an ex-colliery secretary, for the mui j der of Mr Nesbit, cashier at th . Widdringttn Colliery, Northumber ■ land, whose body was found under ; seat in a train in which he had beei travelling with £370 in wages fo: the colliery hands, has concluded. i Dickman was found guilty, am ; sentence of death was passed on him, (The csh bag which was missme after the murder was found in an ail shaft of a colliery near Morpeth, Northumberland. The gold and silver were missim* On the 2nd March, the date of Dickman's arrest, the London Daily Chronicle stated:—"lt is believed now t ; i«t not only was tin crime deliberately planned, but actually rehearsed'.in the train a fort night previously, and a curious story bearing on that was told yesterday to a Daily Chronicle representative by Alderman G. B. Grey, a Morpeth magistrate, who has communicated the facts officially to the police Alderman Grey says that a fortnight at?o two commercial travellers who culled at his business establishment informed his sons that while journey i-g to Morpeth they were disturbed by revolver shots in the next compartment They were travelling, it is worthy of note, in the same Bow train in which a fortnight later the crime was committed, and they asserted that one shot penetated ; thfl partition of their compartment. j The inference is, _o course, that the I intending murderer was experimenting with the revolver to see if the sound alarmed neighbouring passengers. The story might have been received with considerable reserve had it been told after the murder, but the travellers told their tale a fortnight ago."
