At a meeting of the Chriftchurrh Tramway Board, the appointment was approved of Mr H A. D. Browne, of Sydney, as traffic manager at a salary ot .£3OO per annum. ) The funeral took place at Wellington yesterday of Mr G. W. Bepre, who died on Monday while undergoing an operation. He was for many years a member of I the Taranakl street Methodist Church, Wellington. Rev S. J. I Serpell. minister of the church, conducted the funeral service. I Lieuts. J. G Roache. Wellington ; Guards, and J. Hutch™, College Riflee, have qualifier) for captains' certificates. Acting-Lieuts. R. Evatr, Wellington Uuarrts, and S. Cowle?, Johnsonville Rifles,- have qualified as lieutenants. Mr G. M. Thomson, M.P., was delayed in Melbourne rwing tithe sudden illness of tYe lady whom he was about to marry, but medical j treatment proved efficacinu&, and Mr Thomson "and his wife arrived in ' Dunedin by the Maitai after a rough J passage. - • | Mr F..T. Harding, well-known in j business circles here, who.has been suffering from ill health for some considerable time and was ordered away for a, change by his medical advisere, lies in'a very precarious condition in Wellington, having suffered a relapse. Rev. Father Mac Donald,, son of the late Mr Aloysius Mac Donald* was buried at Cooma, New South Walas, where he last worked. Rev. Father J, J. Norns, parish priest of Cooma, and uther clergy, took part in the funeral service, which was attended by altar bays, pupils of Holy Cross Convent, Passionist Fathers, an J Children of Mary. ' The late Signor GiovaDni Virginie Schiaparelli, of the Observatorio di Brera, Milan whose death was announced on Tuesday, was elected an Associate of the Royal Astronomical Society on Bth November, 1872. In the same year ( he received the gold medal of thj society, its highest award, and the only , one given each j year, for his astronomical work. The late Mr Thos. Lawrv, of Fea- j therston, was a well-known Wairarapa resident. lie arrived in Wellington with his wife from Penzance, Cornwall, in 38725, in the ship Elaine. He was employed on the construction of the Wellington Featherston railway at Upper Hutt. Then he settleo* down ac Fdatherston, I where he resided to the ei>d. The I late Mr Lawry is survived by Mrs | Lawry and a family of four daughters I < and three sons.
In proposing a vote of thanks to the chairman, Mr T. M. Wiiford, at the conclusion of the Municipal Conference, the Mayor of Dnnedin stated that Mr Wilford's knowledge of matters municipal and his power as chairman were an eye opener to him. The Mayor of Christchurcb, who seconded the motion, said they could not have had a more capable gentleman to guide their deliberations than Mr Wiiford. The Mayor of Ashburton, who supported the motion, sta'ecj that he had been present at four municipal conferences, and he felt sure that-every delegate appreciated the chairman's impartiality, ability, and tact. The motion was carried with a round of applause. Mr Wiiford suitably replied.
