CARTERTON NEWS.

Own Correspondent/ Monday. The funeral of the late Mr Adam Armstrong. Mayor of Carterton, took place, to-day. Business places were closed during the afternoon, and the attendance was thoroughly representative, embracing settlers from every part of the Wairarapa. Mr Buchanan, M.P., the Borough Councillors, the Clerk of the County, and many others were present, the Town Clerk and the Councillors acting as pallbearers. The funeral left the late residence of the Mayor at 1 o'clocfc, and proceeded to the Anglican Church, Here a solemn service was held, and at its, close the "Dead March in Saul" was played. The procession was then re-formed, and the chief mourners, including the son-in-law, brothers-in-law, and grandchildren, were followed by aany citizens and settlers on foot, and a great number of vehicles and horsemen. The casket was a handsome one, and was covered with beautiful wreaths, a number of which were composed of early spring flowers. The concluding portion of the ceremony was conducted by the Rev. ¥oung at the graveside, and there were large numbers of friends who looked their last upon the mortal remains of their old fellow settler.

Mr S. Gregory, of the firm of Thomas and Gregory, aerated cordial manufacturers, severed his association with the firm at the end of last month, and on Saturday left for Canada. His numerous friends will wish him all success there. Mr R. Thomas is to carry on the business. The Rev. H. T. and Mrs Stealey have returned from a holiday visit to Gisborne. In October next Mr and Mrs Stealey propose a trip to England, provided a suitable relieving principal for the College cap he ob--tained.

The health of Mr R. Goodir, of Dalefield, ia at present causing his friends some anxiety.
