Mr Harry M. Skeet, Commissioner ol Crown Lands for Southland, is at present visiting Wellington. Mr G. F. Lane, accountant, has just undergone an operation to his leg. Although he has to make use of crutches, he has returned to his duties in the Council office.
A resolution of condolence with the relatives of the late Mr Adam Armstrong. Mayor of Carterton, was passed at the Municipal Conference at Wellington yesterday.
At a meeting of the Garrison Band on Saturday evening, Sflrgeant J. A. Donaldson, who has just resigned after serving 38 years, was presented with a handsome silver teapot, suitably inscribed. Mr J. G. Duncan, who has resigned his position as consular agent for America at Wellington, has been succeeded by Mr C. H. Turner, of the Blackball Coal Company.
S ! r Joseph Ward, as PostmasterGeneral, w»ll next Friday even?ng make presentations to Mr J. a. Hutton, the retiring Chief Postmaster at Wellington, and Mrs Hutton, on behalf of the local lettpr-carriers.
Mr A. C. Paul, who has occupied the position of teller at the local branch of the Batik of Australasia, for the past five years, hag received notice of his transfer to tfawera as relieving officer for the Taransiki district.- Mr Paul will leave Masterton during the present week.
The friends of Mr Alan Cameron will regr t to learn that he is at present laid up in Miss Palmer's private hospital in.Wellington, suffering from an injury to: his knee, which, though sustained a good many years ago, has necessitated an operation recently. It will be some weeks before Mr Cameron will be about again.
Lord Islington has appointed Captain Hamilton as his first aide-de-camp. He will travel to New Zealand in the same steamer as Lady Islington. Captain Hamilton is a son ot Lord Claude Hamilton, and nephew of the Duke of Abercom. He was adjutant in the Grenadier Guards, and like Captain Shannon and Captain Maitland—the Governor's other aides —is a keen soldier.
As some slight recognition of the services of Miss McCalmont as postmistress, the residents of the Taueru yesterday presented her with a handsome watch and lung neck chain. Inside the case is engraved "Presented to Maud McCalmont by the residents of Taueru, 30 6.10." The present which was contained in a green plush case,,was presented at the;establishment of Mr A -Henderson, jeweller, Master'on. Miss McCalmont has been transferred to the post offke, Alfredton.
Masterton musical circles ; will shortly be strengthened by the addition of Miss Rosalie Handley, who is at present resident in New Plymouth. Miss Handley distinguished herself at the Nauier competitions last year by winning the following prizes—First, gold medal, soprano solo; first, gold medal, mezzo-sopra no sacred solo; first, silver medal, soprano solo, own choice; and second, silver medal, soprano sacred. In the previous year Mips Handley . captured the first prize, silver medal, for soprano solo at the Blenheim competitions, and, at the opening concert of the New Plymouth Liedertafel last December, she was specially engaged to sing the soprano solos.
