THE KNYVETT CASE.

At a meeting, held m Dunedin in connection with the Knyvett case, Mr A. R. Barclay moved:— "That ihis meetirg, having heard the facta of the Koyvett case as set forth by the speakers from Auckland, expresses its strong opinion that Parliament should pass the necessary legislation to provide for a new and fair trial for Captain Knyvett; and prevent a travesty of justice similar to that of the Knyvett case, occurring in the case of other persons who may be officially accused of military crimes in the Dominion." Lieut-Colonel Smith moved as an amendmer.t:—"That this meeting declines to take any steps th&t will hamper £the Defence Department in the maintenance of the discipline of the forces of the Dominion." The chairman expressed doubt whether this was really an amendment, but Lieut.-Colonel Smith, amid hooting and boohing from the audience, that was distinctly hostile sto his proposal, insisted that it be put. When it was seconded and put* he was the only man who voted for it, and Mr Barclay's motion wa3 carried.
