ENGINEER'S REPORT.

The County JL'ngineer, # Mr D. Mt> Lschlan, submitted the following report for the past month at the meeting yesterday:— Opaki Kiding.—Black Creek Road —Contract No. 222 has been completed and the balance of A. Johnson's accrued thirds have I etn utilised in widening and improving the temporary formed lengths in the vicinity of the contract. Waingawa to Camp Koad—Contract No. 215, delivering 1,280 cub. yards of metal for repairs. The above work has been satisfactorily carried out. Improving the drainage on the low-lying ground at the Education Reserve. The amount authorised by the Council has been expended,' with the result that the water has been materially lowered along the length dealt with. Enlarging the waterway from the Masterton Waimata Koad through the properties in the vicinity of the old Hospital. The amount voted last year will be inadequate to carry on the work effectually to the Lansdowne Road, which I think it would be advisable to do, and protect a considerable length of the main road and path from flood. I have regraded the drain to this point, and estimate it will require an additional £25 to carry on the work to the point mentioned; the material encountered in the deepening of the drain is an exceptionally hard conglomerate ironstone and the progress, in consequence, has been slow. Mr Cooper's request to have the drainagfi diverted from his frontage at Adamsvil'e. To alter the drainage permanently would involve the regrading and forming of over three chains of road and footpaths. The approximate cost of alteration would be £l2. TeWhiti Kiding.—The strengthening of the Waingawa river protective works, mentioned in my last month's report, have been effected. Surface repairs have been made to the Masterton-Gladstone and Pa Karaka Roads. Rangitumau Riding.—Kaka-amu Road.—Contract No. 220—delivering 395 cub. .yards of metal'for repairs has been duly complete'). / Small surfaca repairs have been made to the weaker portions on the northern length of the Te Ore OreBideford Road. Wainuioru Riding.—Weraiti-Fer-nyhurst Road.—Contract No, 207. metalling 154 chains of road. The contractor has completed 142.61 chains of metalling which the' Council has agreed to take over upon the contract being maintained in terms of specification. The work ia now being finally raked in. Building a roadman's cottage— Contract No. 223. The construction of above is reported finished by the contractor. Weraiti-Pernyhurst and Brancepeth Roads.—Contract No. 211, metalling 80.17 chains of -road. Owing to the weather breaking work had to be suspended for tthe season. In consideration of the contractor having executed an extra length exceeding the amount unfinished in the original contract, I have deemed it equitable to deduct the unfinished length, eight chains, from the original contract. This can be cumpleted early in the season with contemplated works. Contract No. 212.—The bridge painting has been reported finished by the contractor. Masterton-Waimata Road.—Diver's Corner to Taueru Section—Contract No. 226, delivering 1,280 cub. yards of metal for repairs. The contractors are now completing the work. An additional 35 cub. yards of rock have been supplied to the weaker portions of the Maungapake ha end of this road, Blairlogie-East Coast Road.—Contract Nd. 206, supplying 2,540 cub. yards of metal for repairs. The work has been completed. Upper Taueru Riding.—The reconstruction of a 24-feet span bridge at Bridge Creek is about finished. Slight surface repairs have been made north of Bideford. Wainui-o-mapa Road.—l have inspected the road with Mr Ban is, and he is considering the advisability of undertaking the making of a temporary road, offered through Glendonald/or adopting the original survey, where the work is consider - ably heavier. I am awaiting his rePly. Allredton Riding.—Contract No.

224—The allocation for metalling has been spent on above road. Waihoki Road.—Contract No 183, metalling 45 chains of road with burnt papa, let in November, 190K, has at last been completed, with an additional length of 1 chain 27 links.
