MASTERTON PARLIAMENTARY DEBATING SOCIETY.
At Monday night's meeting of the Masterton Parliamentary Debating Society, the adjourned debate on the Land Bill took place. Five members spoke in favour of the Leasehold tenure, and opposed the Bill while seven championed the Freehold and supported the Bill. A surprise was occasioned, by the Native Minister expressing views diametrically opposed to his colleagues. The addresses on the whole were of a high order, and considering that many of the members were making their maiden speeches, it is quite certain that by the end of the "session," the Society will have a large precentage of first class debaters. The debate was adjourned at 9.45 till next Monday night, when it will be concluded, and the -House j will ko into committee to consider the Bill. This will enable Mr Homsby to p,peak next Monday rilGrht, as he wiil then vacate the chair yi favour of the Chairman of Committees (Mr Cooper). After the "galleries," which were crowded, had been cleared the Society went into committee to consider the challenge from the Wellington iT.M.C.A. Debating Society. The team to represent this Society was elected by ballot, and the following were selected:—Messrs Hornsby, Cooper andSykes; emergency, Hebenton. The debate will take place in Wellington next month the subject being Leasehold v. Freehold, Masterton taking the Freehold. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Henderson for landing a clock to the Society, and to Mr Haughey for fixhg up the hanging of the clock. Mr Hornsby volunteered to give tui'.ion to the members, and the offer was much appreciated by the members, who intend to take [iaU advantage of it.
