PERSONAL.
Mr J. A. Connpll. the well-known chess player, is returning to Wellington this morning, after spending a visit to the Wairarapa in connection with a proposal to establish a local industry, which would be of considerable advantage to the district. The many friends of Mrs WPiatt, of Opaki, will regret to learn of the death of her father, which took place at Auckland last week. The following particulars are gathered from the local papers:— By the demise of George Death, of Dominion Road, Mount Eden, New Zealand has lost another of its old and respected pioneers. He was the second son of the late Georee Death* farmer, of Drinkston, Suffolk, England, where he wa3 born in 1831. Educated at Woolpit, the deceased anived in -Wellington in 1856, in the ship Hastings, residing there for ten years. In 1865 he purchased a large block of land in Kangitikei, which was then a wilderness covered with bush, scrub and flax. Being a man full of energy, he. persevered and got the land under cultivation, eventually making it one of the best farms in the district. In 1885 he removed to the Paiea district, Taranaki, buying various farms along the coast line between Feilding and Hawera. Ssven years later he went to live at Waverley, and in 1901 turned his attention to the Waikato and purchased a large run of y,OOO acres known as the Hora Hora Estate. "This property is being farmed by the younger members of his family, deceased having since his retirement from active life resided in Dominion Road, Mount Eden. The late Mr Death, besides his large interest in land, possessed sawmills and threshing plants, and was a large employer of labour. He devoted a great deal of his time to public affairs, having been member and chairman of county council, road boards, and school committee*, while for eighteen years h.e was a justice of the peace. He leaves a widow and grown-up family of ten rfons and three daughters. J ,j ~
