Ths latter was a well-known j old identity of the West Coast of tbe I South Island, having arrived thare | about fifty years ago. As may be understood, the Coast in 'those days was a rather different .place ta what it is to-day, and Mr - and Mrs j Cochrane experienced the stirring j times incidental $o the discoveries . of gold ani thb accompanying "rushes" which made the localities famous the worl l over. As tha helpmeet of a busy timber merchant: and later hotelkeeper, the lute Mrs Cochrane showtd thu sterling qualities possessed by so many of the old plone. rs, and she was endeared to a very large circle of people. The deceased lady, who was 81 years of age, and had spent over.sixty years of her life in New, Zealand, is to be buried at Auckland. The relatives will have the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement, and particularly Mr J. W. Cochrane, who honly recently lost his wife.
