ESTIMATED COST OF THE EXPEDITION. 1 11 v CAPTAIN SCOTT HOPEFUL. Received June 2, 9.35 pm. LONDON, June 2. In an interview Captain Scott sp id I he hoped that the total cost of ths Antarctic expedition would be within £50,000 The Mother Country had done its part, and he hoped to arouse the interest of the people in the Overseas Dominions, wfr&n he visited South Africa and Australsia. Failing this the funds would be insufficient to complete the expedition's work. Scientific consideration, he added, would not be sacrificed to a mere "Polar dash." Dr Charot, the French Antarctic explorer, who has arrived in Guernsey, sent good wishes to the Terranova, which sailed uridfer the White ensign/ Lieutenant Evans commanding. Many ships in the Thames were dressed with flags and streamers, and sirens saluted the Terranova as she passed s oat ' Captain Bartlett has stated that the American expedition intended to start for the Antarctic in 1911, commencing in the W eddell Sea.
