SOUTH AFRICA.
MESSAGE FROM THE KING. United Press Association—By Eleotrio Telegraph Copyright. Received June 1, 10.30 p.m. LONDON, June 1. Sir J. H. Devilliers. Chief Justice of Cape Colony, has been made Chief Justice of the South African Supreme Court. King George has conferred a I baronetcy on him. The King in a message to the South African people states that his earnest hope, strong and confident, is that the new constitution will, under Divine Providence, further the highest welfare of South Africa, and add strength to the Empire. Civic services to celebrate the Union were held at Durban and Martizburg town halls. j The Natal Advertiser says the Union is affiected guile and deception, but British doggedness will triumph. The Natal Mercury is profoundly disappointed with General Botha, who it states, betrayed his trust to the British. The Cape Times declares the presence of Hertzog and Fischer in the cabinet will impair the whole hearted confidence which is desirable.
