NEW SMOKELESS POWDER.
A oew and, it is .claimed, more effective smokeless powder than any yet known has been invented by-18. Guichard, a photographer, at Lonse Saulnier, the shooting club of which has been making some pediments with it on i o Monteil ground. The target coasiated of a biock of very hard wood nearly 31in in thickness. The president of the club began by sending a Lebel bullet into the target, which showed a penetration of close on 25in, and then he employed a cartridge invented by M. Guichard, which, with the exception of the powder, is identical with the Lebel, the penetration in this case being upwards of 29Jin. All this was witnessed, says .the Stand-' ard's Paris correspondent, by a number of officers, who were much impressed by the result,-* and. these club experiments are shortly to be < followed by official trials. The inventor, who is 60, has had several offers for his secret from foreign governments.
