MUIR FOUND GUILTY. By Telegraph—Press Association. PALMERSTON.N., May 30, Mr Justice Cooper was occupied all day re-hearing the case asrair.st Archibald.Muir, charged ,with stealing cheques, valued at about £BOO, from the National Mortgage Company, Ltd. (Longburn Freezing Works).. The jury twice be fore disagreed. After a retirement of three hour 3. ■ the jury raturned a verdict o£ guilty on the charges of stealing the last ■ three cheques in the series. They also found that, the person to whomthe cheques were made .out was fictitious. The jury added.a rider recommending that the prisoner 'be leniently ' dealt with, on account of his age and previous good character, and the laxity with which his business was conducted. Mr Cooper,/at the.former,,trial,,gave notice of appeal against the indictment on the ground that the evidence was in the direction not of tceft, but of false pretences. This point was again raised, and leave to appeal was granted, his Honor deferring tence till the Court nf Appeal bid dealt with the matter. > The Manawatu Caledonian Society has decided to match R. J. Scott, of Stratford, and Gordon Smith, of Pjhiatua, at the next Caledonian meeting on June 16th, for £2O js.side, in a catch-as-catch-cun wrestling match. Smith bealf Scott at the last Caledoxiian meeting.
