The Dean of Newcastle, in an address at the Anglican Cathedral on "Socialism,'' declared:— "I am.£orry to say that the Church tins not done her duty to the bodies as well as to the soule of tboae to whom she should ministeer. If the church is going to stand on one aide, wrapped in antique respectability, living in the past, forgetful of the present, and profoundly indifferent to the future, without doubt she will cease to be a power, and in time will become non-existent." (During the Newcastle strike the Dean more than once took the plat form, His utterances, straight 10 the point, on occasion brought him into conflict with some of the strike leaders).
