CARTERTON NEWS.
(Own Correspondent.) Saturday. Mr and Mrs J. E. Thwaites, of Wellington, arrived here latt evening, to spend a week's holiday. The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council was held teday, Cr. W. Perry presiding. Before commencing the business, the resolution forwarded to the Premier expressing sorrow at the death of King Edward VII. was read, the members standing. A credit balance of £278 6s 6d was reported and accounted amounting to £466 13s 4d were p?.3sed for payment, I was reported that seven horses an 3 fifteen head of cattle had been impounded during the month. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote that the Department was going into the question I of school sites at Carrington and the
old gravel reserve site would be considered. A water rate of 2-9 d, and a general rale of 1-133 were struck. A transfer of the lease of the Gladstone Hotel from Mr White to Mr "¥oung was agreed to It was reported that the Eagineer's report a3.to the requirements of the Waiohine Bridge had been forwardsd to t he Featherston County with a" request that both committers should mett at the bridge, but so fur r.o reply had been received. An application from Mr C. Aplin to purchase a piece of road leading into his property was not entertained. The Engineer's report was read, and wo;ks recommended were authorised. At a meeting of the Friendly Societies' Council last evening, the resignation of Bro. W. H. Partridge as treasurer was received and accepted with regret. Bro. C. J. De Lacy was appointed In his stead.
