The barque Swanhilda from Cardiff for Antofagasta, went ashore at Station Island in the Argentine. Fifteen of the crew were saved, but the rest were drowned, including the captain and his wife. It will be remembered that it was on the Swanhilda some years ago that the notorious murderer Butler escaped to 'Frisco.bat was caught before landing through the extraordinary foresight of Detective Jack Roche, of Sydney, now Superintendent of Detectives in New South Wales. Koche acted on his theory that Butler was on board ai.d actually followed the Swanhilda from Sydney and captured the murderer in mid-ocean. He was afterwards brought to Sydney and executed for the murder of Lee Weller, a Frenchman, and others. Butler's method while in New South Wales was to engage a mate, get him to dig for alleged gold, then shoot him suddenly, rob him, and bury the body in the spacejust due. His victims were numerous.
