MASTERTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

COMPLAINT AGAINST THS j POST OFFICE. The monthly meeting of the committee of ths Masterton Chamber of Commerce was held in the A. and P. rooms yesterday afternoon. Mr G. C. Summerell presided, and there were aiso present, —Messrs J D. Cruickshank. W. B. Chenneils, H. Donald, M. Caselberg, A. Henderson, E. H. Waddington, and T. J. Thompson. Several apologiea for absence were received. The secretary reported a credit, balance to date of £lO 0s 2d. Correspondence was received from the DannevirkeCl amber of Commerce with reference to tbe present system of rendering telephone debit notices, and asking for the co-opsra-tion of the Master ton Chambar in having the old system reverted to A letter was "also received from the Eketahuna Chamber on the subject of telephone debit notices. The Postal Department wrote stating that debit notices would be rendered daily to subscribers paying daily, but in .other cases they would bo rendered weekly. Mr A. W. Hogg, M.P., wrote stating that plans of the new Courthouse were now being prepared by the Government Architect. Mr M. Caeelberg referred to the inconvenience of replying to correspondence from Wellington, received by the 11.38 a.m. train. Often, he said, the mail was not sorted till 0112 o'clock, a delay of nearly an hour and a half, which made it very inconvenient for business men to reply to urgent correspondence in time for the 3.45 pm. train. On the motion of Mr Chenneils, it was decided that the Postmaster be wiitten to, and his attention drawn to the delay in sorting the morning mails from Wellington after their arrival thereby, causing great inconvenience to business people, and asking him to explain matters.

QUARTERLY MEETING

The quarterly meeting of the Chamber was held subsequently, at which there were present, Messrs G. C. Summerell (chairman), R. Brown, J. D. Cruickshank, H. Donald, J. C. Bo.fdington, M. Case! berg, T. J. Thompson, F. Wit f on, A. Hencercon, W. B. Che! nella, and E. H. Waddinsfton. The question of the extension cf Essex Street from Chapel Street to Queen Street [was discussed at length, several nresent urging that advantage should be taken to acquire the land for the street before it was all built upon. It was finally resolved that rough Council be urged to acquire a strip of land to make a street from Chapel Street to Qjeen Street, opposite Essex Street, and that Messrs Brown and Henderson be appointed a sub-committee to go into the matter and lay figures as to the cost etc., before the Chamber. This concluded the business.
