CABLE SERVICE.
FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S OFFER. United Press Association—By Elect io Telegraph Copyright Received May 27, II p.m. MELBOURNE, May 27. The Federal Government has decided to offer a subsidy of £2,000 a year for three years for a cable service from abroad that will supply a minimum of a thousand words daily,limit ed to existing associations. The conditions have not all been defined, but they will generally be on the lines of suggestions made in the Senate Committee's report. The service must be available to all newspapars that comply with the conditions. The control of tha service will be left to the newspapers interested, every paper taking the service to have a voice m the management. Messages up to a thousand words per day will be transmitted by the Pacific cable, but no stipulation is made as to the route beyond that numbrr. The Postmaster-General will set le the conditions under which the setvice is to be supplied to the papers, Lut not the terms. Ths Federal Government has instructed the High Commissioner to support in every way possible tha construction of a State-owned Atlantic line.
