TE WHARAU NOTES.

From Our Own Correspondent. ' Saturday. Several frosts, more or leas severe. have been experienced here during the past week. Several slips on the roads have resulted from the heavy min3 of last week, which considerably hampered the carrying of mails and other traffic. The Te Wharau Rifle Club propose holding a competition on the 24th inst. for prizes kindly donated by Mr R. Barrer, the eat-.emed President of the Club. There are some handsome and valuable trophies, which should ensure some good shooting and keen comp&tition. Mr F. C. H. Cotter, our worthy storekeeper, has also donated a handsome trophy to be presented to the rifleman scoring the first possible. Te Wharau residents generally are very much interested at present in Haliey's Comet, and every morning enthusiasts face the elements to study the various changes as observed from morning to morning. The past few mornings being very bright, a splendid view of the comet has been obtained.

Mr Kuinmer, of "Kummerstein," motored into town on Wednesday. Mr and Mrs ".Cameron, who have been visiting in tnis district, have left for their noma in Marton this week.

The bachelors of Te Wharsu intend holding a dance on the 27th inst, and as a strong committee have arrangements in hand a most enjoyable evening may be confidently looked forward to. The householders' meeting to form a school committee, which was postponed on account of inclement weather, is to take place on the 30th inst., at 8 p.m., in the schoolroom. The deer-stalking season in this district concluded on Saturday last, and although stalks were numerous throughout the season good heads, and even the reports of good headd, have been conspicuous hy their absence. The prevailing opinion among 3talkers is that the deer have deteriorated to an alarming extent.
