SENIOR MATCHES,
RED STAR v. GLADSTONE. The Red Star and Gladstone senior fifteens met at Gladstone on Saturday, a hard-fought contest ending in Stars' favour by 6 points to 3. Gladstone kicked off up hill, and for a time play was centred, but the Star backs soon got going, and some nice concerted work saw N. Chamberlain nearly over. From the kick-off Gladstone were hard pressed and were compelled to force twice in quick succession. The Stars' forwards were now putting in some nice foot-work, and a good rush saw Bert Welch over the Gladstone line near the corner. The kick, which was a very good attempt, went wide—Red Stars 3, Gladstone nil. Again the Stars' men got going, and it took the Gladstone backs ail their time to stop theii determined onslaughts. Breaches of the rules now became very frequent, and two fruitless attempts at goal from difficult angles were tried by Stars. Play was very fast for the rest of the spell, and at half-time the score stood unaltered. On resuming, Gladstone at once pressed, and for several minutes looked like scoring, but the sound defensive work of Morris, Ball and Douglas repeatedly saved their side when a try seemed imminent. By good foot-work the Stars got away and raced up the field in grand style, but a breach by the opposing side gave them a free kick. Ball, who took the kick kicked well up and rushing D. Thompson, who mulled the ball, having a bad arm,and who was standing over the Gladstone line, scored the second try for Stars, the kick did not add the extra points. Play now became very lively, the players being urged on by the exciting yells fit the large crowd of barrackeis. From a Gladstone rush a mark was obtained in front of the
Star posts and S. Mason bad no difficulty with the kick. The rent of the game was very willing, but lack of form by the Gladstone men acting as a big handicap The game was very even, but almost the only gocd showing were the passing rushes by the Star backs, and the good loot-work of their forwards.
