MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Council was held yesterday. There were present—Crs W. J. Welch (chairman), A. Murray, J. Morris, H. Toogood, J. Colquhoun, C. Kebbell D. W. Foreman, and J. Miller.
CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was rearl as follows: From Hall and Connell, asking the Council to terminate their metalling contract on Weraiti Road.
It was resolved°that the contract be terminated, and the contractors to maintain the road for a month.
From J. C. O'Connor, offering fo leasD the Council's gravel reserve at Tauaru.—Referred to the Councillor f g the Riding to report. From th.9 Public Works Office, with a warrant of authority for the construction of the Northern Approach works.
From Gawith and Logan, asking if the Council is prepared to agree to close a road through Mr A. G. Pilmer's property.—Lsft in the hands of the Councillor for the Riding and the Engineer to report at next meeting.
From the Public Trustee, stating the anticipated surplus from the Tawataia Toll ainking fund is £l2B 9s 4d.
From James Foreman, re fence erected at the Waihoki and Pongaroa roads.—Left in the hands
of Cr Toogood and the Engineer.
From the secretary of the Upper Plain Water supply, asking permission to carry water across the road at Akura. —Referred to the Engineer, with power to act. Frum the Premier, stating copies of the • proposed Local Government Bill will be distributed amongst public bodies interested.
From the secretary of the Private Telephones Committee indicating the locality where trees are interfering with the telephone lines. From the Valuer-General, concerning the revised Valuationßoll for the Alfredtosi Riding.
From the treasurer of the Wairarapa South County Council, advising payment of the Council's share of the upkeep of Waingawa bridge, and share of water race overseer's wages.
The Engineer was authorised to inspect the road to Mr H. Harris' property, and report at next meeting. APPLICATIONS FOR GRANTS. It was resolved to send in applications for the following grants, the members for Wairarapa and Masterton to be asked to support the same —Riversdale Road, £200; Mangarei Road, £200; £250, £ for £; Alfred-ton-Weber Road bridge, Barton's Line, £200; Miki Miki Road, £IOO. FINANCE COMMITTEE'S REPORT.
Tne treasurer's statement showed —Bank General account, cr. £1,879 15s 10d; Local Bodies' Loans account, cr., £933; Accounts credit balance, £2,614 Is lid; Receipts since 12th April, £540 2s 2d, including rates £502 12s. Accounts amounting to £2,094 0s 5:1, W2re recommended for payment.
RECOMMENDATIONS. It was recommended: That applications be made for a loan of £3,000 for the improvement of the Northern Approach works. That it be a recommendation to the Council to abolish the toll gate on the Tawataia Road on and after the Ist June, and to give the gatekeeper notice that his services will not be required after 11th July next.
That the Council be recommended to obtain the consent of the Treasur/Department to the closing of the Tawataia toll gate, and to advise the Post and Telegraph Department if they wish to maintain" the toll house as a post and telegraph office the Council will be prepared to make arrangements with them for this purpose. The report was adopted. FENCING PROPERTIES.
The Clerk was instructed to write to the property owners on the AlfredtonHinemoa road to fence off their properties with a view to removing the I gates that now obstruct the road. Also to owners on the Holmes-Tirau-mea Road, the Alfredton-Weber Road, and the Utawai Road to the same effect. BRIDGE WANTED. It was resolved to call tenders for the erection of a bridge over the Mangarei creek. Cr Miller and the Engineer to deal with the tenders. It was resolved to call tenders for a mile more or less formation on Rivers dale Road. It was resolved to apply to the Borough Council for the use of its steam roller and staff for use on the Upper Opaki Road. other matters. It was resolved to call tenders for twenty chains of metalling and one culvert on Uriti Road. The Clerk was instructed to write to the Public Worka Department pointing out that no culvert had been put in on theWairers Glendonaid Road tha* - had been made by the Department's staff. The Engineer's report was read and adopted. -
