LARGE AND' REPRESENTATIVE ','; : ; : MEETING. By Telegraph—Piesa Asaociatior. ; PALMERSTON N., May S. There was a very representative gathering of stock auctioneers in Palmcrston North'to-day, presided over by Mr R. S. Abraham. The auctioneers preaent represented the Associations of Hawke'a Bsy, WaJrarapa, Taranaki, and Manawatu, and West Coast, and they discussed matters of general interest in regard to tne mortality of stock with a view to them being dealt with in the amending Bill to be introduced by the Minister for Justice this session. It was decided to ask Mr T. K. Macdonald M.L.C., to head a deputation to the Minister to convey to him the views of stock, auctioneers regarding amendments, and it wa3 suggested that a similar meeting of Wellington stock auctioneers be held.
Exception was taken to tbe 'allegations published by the New Zealand Times correspondent from Taranaki regardiag "trotting." It was denied that such a state of things as alleged existed, and the delegates pointed out that it was in the best interests of stock auctioneers to ensure that "trotting" or any other practice which would not be calculated to ensure confidence should be prevented. In the evening a dinner was held at the Grand Hotel, Mr Abraham presiding. iMr John Stevens, of the original firnc of Messrs Stevens and Gorton, was the chief guest, and gave interesting reminiscences of the initiation of stock auctioneering on this coast.
