HOCKEY.
The opening of the men's senior and junior championship hockey competitions took place yesterday.
SENIOR MATCHES.
CARTERTON v. POST AND TELEGRAPH.
This match was played on the Lansdowne ground,and altnough the visitors won by three goals to nil, the game was a very even one. In the second spell the home team had decidedly the best of the game. Shortly after the game commenced Tunnicliffe shot a goal for Carterton, and a nother goal was shortly afterwards added by R. Reid. Carterton continued to have the advantage, and shortly before the whistle sounded R, Reid repeated his previous performance. From the start of the second spell the local team for quite a time kept Carterton on the delence, but they were outclassed, and the game ended with Uarfcertoo the victors. Mr R. B.- Rosson was referee.
KNOX v. MARYBOROUGH. The newly formed Martinborough senior team played their first match at Greytown yesterday, and were defeated by Knox by 9 goals to 1. La Roche, a former W.F.C.A. player, was by far the most troublesome opponent Knox encountered, the only goal baing registered off his .stick. The ground was not in the best of condition for the match, and players on both sides received occasional knocks. F. Griffiths (3) J. Rue (2), H. Reynolds (2), and Dixon and Hendry one each, found the Martin- ( borough net, and T. La Roche notched Mariinborough's only goal. Mr DryI den was referee.
JUNIOR MATCHES. CARTERTON A v. ST. MATTHEW'S B.
On the No. 1 ground, Carrington Park, Carterton, yesterday, Carterton A junior and St. Matthew's B teams met, the game going in favour of the home team by 5 goals to nil. The game was very even in the first half, but the Carterton team had the better of the second spell. Dudson (2), Gayfer, McKenzie and Johnson one each, scored Carterton's goals. Mr Hatch was referee.
EXCELSIOR A v. CARTERTON B
The above fixture played at Carterton yesterday resulted a3 follows: — Excelsior 12. Carterton nil. Byrne (3), Hornblow (3), Ball (2), Ashley (2), and Picton and H. Williams one each, secured goal?. Mr Bannin held the whistle.
ST. MATTHEW'S A v. EXCELSIOR B.
This match wag played at Lansdowne, and resulted in a very easy win for St. Matthew's A by 12 goals to nil. Mr W. J. O'Meara was referee.
