Mr Douglas Smith, who had his collarbone broken in a practice game of football recently, has now almost recovered. Mr W. C. Buchanan, M.P., was in town to-day, and many residents congratulated him on a speedy recovery after his recent accident The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council was held here to-day, Cr W. Perry presiding. A credit balance of £789 4s Id was announced, and accounts amounting to ±'s4B Os 3d were passed for payment. The ranger reported having impounded 57 head of cattle and seven iiorses during the month. The I Chief Health Officer having approved, it was decidad to grant an application to erect boiling-down works on the Karaka Estate, the requirements of the Health Department to be complied with. Correspondence was received from the Cnief Health Officer respecting applications from the Farmers' Meat Company, to construct certain works. It was decided that a plan of the drainage was necessary before permits could be granted. Upon receipt of this the Council, as a committee, would visit the locality and go thoioughly into the matter. The Company also wrote for permission to connect a private road from the works at Waingawa with the Masterton-Uarterton road. As the Council was of opinion that it had no power in regard to private roads, it was decided to go into the matter when the Council visited the works. It was stated that the following grants had been received:— Wharau-Flat Point road, £100; JJriscoll road, £ for £ subsidy, up to £100; Horki road, £150; Kaiwhata Landing. £SO. Notice was given to strike a 1 l-3d in the £ general rate on the unimproved value, and a water race maintenance rate of 2-9 d in the £. Cr Moore was appointed the Council's representative at the County Conference. The Engineer was authorised to have certain works carried out, The death occurred here last evening of Mr T. Kempton, of Greytown, who had been ailing for several weeks. Deceased had been associated with Greytown from its early history, being one of its oldest settlers. The funeral will take place at Greytown on Monday.
