COMMITTED FOR TRIAL

Pawtlka arrived at Palmerston North by the ixpress train this morning. There was a large crowd at the station to see him. Be alighted, handcuffed to two constables, and accompanied bv a warder and other members of the force. His youthful appearance was the subject of much comment. lie was neatly dressed, and shaved, and had a healthy colour. There was little of the unshaven, scowling-eyed individual with whom the published photographs have familiarised the public. The first case heard against him was the theft of a butcher's steel, which was dismissed on the ground of insufficient evidence.
In case 3 of breaking and entering and theft from the dwelling of Miss McKay and arson in connection therewith, the theft of a bicycle and the escape from Palmerston Gaol, the accused pleaded not guilty, and reserving his defence he was committed for trial.
Mr Loughnan prusecuted, and Mr Gilford Moore appeared for the accused. The controversy as to spoiling of his name was settled when he signed the necessary documents "Pawelkn.."
