SATARA DISASTER.
OEFICEBS AND CREW AT SYDNEY. CAPTAIN DECLINES TO MAKE A STATEMENT. NO LIVES LOST. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright. Received April 21, 1.5 p.m. SYDNEY, April 21. The officers and crew of the Satara have arrived. The captain declines to make a statement. Pilot Binstead stated that the inner passage of the Seal Rorks way taken. The vescel struck suddenly. The sea was not heavy, though he believes there was a strong inset. The utmost caim prevailed among the Lascar crew, who immediately went to their posts. After the striking it was decided to heach the Satara. The vessel would not answer her helm at first, but he afterwards got f her headed inshore. The waier, how- j ever, gained so fast that there was [ no hope of bsaching The crew were ordered into the boats, the captain, pilot, and the officers being the last to leave. The latter were pluDged into the water as the vessel suddenly dipped forward and disappeared from sight. The pilot was sucked down, but all, were eventually picked up. No lives were lost at all.
FIFTH ENGINEER'S TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. Received April 21, 2.40 p.m. SYDNEY, April 21. The Satara settled down so fast that the rudder was saon out of the water and the vessel uncontrollable. She sunk within an hour. The fifth engineer was in the water a long time through hia boat sinking alongside of the steamer' Orara. He was nearly frozen by the cold. The third engineer states there was no brfeak to indicate the presence of a shoal. A davitt broke when one of the boats was being lowered, and the boat sank, but there was plenty of room for all in the other boats.
VALUE OF SHIP AND CARGO. Received April 21, 9.25 p.m. SYDNEY. April 21. Two of the Lascars reported drowned went down with the vessel and were floating a long time before being rescued. The crew lost everything. The Satara was valued at from £IOO,OOO to £150,000, and the cargo at from £7,000 to £B,OOO. The Company are their own underwriters.
