SPORTING.
RACING. TURF NOTES. (By "Zetland"). ' The latest addition to M. McGrath's team at Opaki is a colt by The Workman —Pikihuia. It appears that the injury received at Trentham by the Soult colt Marengo was a sprung tendon. He will b« given a lengthy spell, and may be fit for work in the spring. It is probable that Naumai and Waiata may be taken over to Australia in the winter. Properly placed both should prove payable on the other side. Mr A. F. Douglas' team, consisting of Kiatere, Seraphic, Bullworth, Ikon and Seatondale have been brought back to Hastings from Austra'ia. Paisano is doing good schooling work over hurdles at Napier Park. Others being schooled aire Continuance, Sleacombe, Millenial, Merrie Lawn and Karakaturoa. It appears probable that by the time winter sets it* there will be a large number of horses ready to taKe part in hurdle and steeplechase events. In this week's issue the "New Zealand Referee'' states:—"lt is quite within the bounds of possibility that one of the leading Wairarapa Clubs, which at present holds two meetings in a year, may shortly hand in one of its totahsator permits." If there be any truth in the above it will count as a distinctly backward move for this district, which for many years has held its position in the sporting world.. Losses have been made by one district racing club over its recent meetings, but it would be unwise to hand in a totalisator permit, inasmuch as once lost it cduld never be regained. It is probable, however, that the statement made by the "Referee" is merely based on rumour, as it wiJl be admitted this district has sufficient sportsmen to assist in holding the present number of permits preferably to allowing a retrogressive step to be taken. Wairarapa will probably be represented at the Marlborough meeting by Gaelic, Campaign, Kalypeo, Dixie Girl, Leapuki, Aboriginal, Merrie Rose, Mataari, Aimwell, Splash and Fifi. The meeting should be one of the best ever held at Riverlands, as quite a number of good class horses are nominated. The Porirua stable will have a field of seven to send over to xhe convincing ground, and other , leading stables have responded satisfactorily. Weights are uue on Saturday next..
