SPORTS AND PASTIMES.

TURF NOTES. (By "Zetland") Mr R. Knox sustained a loss last •week through the MeVrie England— Roney mire. Bernardine, breaking her hind leg and having to be destroy eJ The accident happened while the mare was doing working exercise on the Opaki track. Bernardine had shown very fair form at the Pahiatua and Wairarapa meetings, ar.d with age would have been one of the payable kind. Full Rate ha 1 ? been thrown out of work, and had been taken back to his owners' place at Longbush. The son of The Officer should make a very capable hurdler, and Mr Foreman might well consider the advisability of getting him schooled over the obstacles while ths horse is 5d good hard condition. Muloch has bean sent over a few hurdles recently, but so far has not shapsd very attractively. If he does xake kinJly to the small sticks, he should be a decided success as he is an undoubted stayer, and acts well in holding ground. Bobrik'jff was brought back from Australia last week, and is to be spelled until July. He will then be taken in hand cgaiu, and it is quite proba'jle that he will be competing at the Australian Jockey Club meeting in Sentember nexc. .

The Steeplechase season will soon be attracting attention. At present it is considered that there will be a lack of cmss country horses, hut this " may not be the case, and it 33 quite probable that the lists will fill well, especially for the leading events for wfcl-h good prize monay will be "offere J. Among the jumpers lately pat into work in view of winter events are El Dorado, Eurus and' Northern Star. Within the next few weeks quite a number of others will ' be on the training tracks. Hilarian is to be put to hurdle racing shortly. Being strongly built and up to plenty of weight he should prove very useful. Lady Medallist is to be spelled for the early winter months. It is quite on the cards that the St. Alwyne mare will be among the New Zealand Cap nominations in June. Weights for the Marlborough ' meeting will be declared on Saturday next by Mr G. Morse. The Soult colt, Marengo, may not be seen on the racing track again, as while contesting the New Zealand St. Leger, at Trentham, he broke a fetlock joint.

FOOTBALL, By Half-Back. The Carterton team journeyed to Gladstone on Saturday last, and alter an interesting game with Gladstone succeeded in defeating the home team by eight points to six. N. McKenzie scored two tries and kicked a goal for Carterton, and F. Fox arid E. Mason each scored a try for Gladstone. A practice match was placed-on the JMasterton Showgrounds on Saturday between the Red Star seniors and juniors. At times soma good play was witnessed, and the juniors held their end up well. The seniors had several fresh men in the field, and of these Douglas played a good game and certainly merited a place in the team. W. Morris, wtio last year played full back for a, Wellington junior team, played in the same position for the Star Seniors on Saturday, and gave promise of being !a useful man. Among the new blood in the juniors was a Maori named Ellis, and he also played a game worthy of mention. The Wairarapa Rugby Union will meet at Carterton on Saturday evening next. Among the players who donned the jersey lor Carterton on Saturday in the Carter ton-Gladstone match was that veteran player and referee, "Ted" McKenzie. "Ted" played in the tbreequarter line, and from accounts given by spectators, "Ted" did yeoman work for his old team. I Another new man who will play for Carterton this season is Mr C. A. C. Opie, who comes from the South Island.' Th« wearers of the maroon jersey are hard at work training, and should be in good form when the season commences in earnest. It is stated that Greyiown will have a good team in the field'this season, and their ranks will hj% "strength-

ened by several players of fame, who have become Grey town residents during the p3st few months. Tbe championship fixtures will in all probability commence ou the first Saturday in May. Considerable interest is being evinced in the Frieudly Societies' seven-aside tournament which is to take place at Masterton on ths Saturday before the championship matches commence. The Carterton Totara Lodge, who hold the Shield at the present time, are this year entering two teams for the tournament. Rumour hath it that the Gladstone) enthusiasts are endeavouring to place a good team in the field this season, and, no doubt, they will have /to be treated with respect when the Championship matches start. Freddie Fox. a new man who played half for this team on Saturday last, was quite a surprise to many, and his play was consistent throughout the game. The Masterton juniors and thirds held a practice on Saturday last, and both these teams should be near the top of the list at the end of the sea son. One thing that was noticeable on Saturday last in the Keri Star senior v. junior match, was the offside play of several of the senior man. Although only a scratch game, it is a very bad habit to ',get into, and often causes bad results in other matches. Junior player's may be excused, but seniors should certainly know better. It is stated that it will be somewhat difficult to get competent men to take charge of the whistle in senior matches this year,
