THE MASTERTON MAYORALTY.

THE MAYOR (MR P. L. HOLLINGS) DOES NOT SEEK RE-ELECTION. In conversation last evening with a representative of the Wairarapa Age, the Mayor JMr P. L. Hollings) stated that he did not intend to offer himself for re-election at tha conclusion of his present term of office. He had found curing the iasc two years that he had'occupied the position of Mayor that the duties of the office had claimed a great deal of his time. "In fact," said Mr Hollings, "I suppose fully half of my time has been given to Mayoral duties. 1 have never known v. hat it was to have an abhplutely free evening." Mr Hollings went on to say that he felt compelled co give proper attention to private duties, and that being so he had really not sufficient time to devote to public life. He had given four years to municipal affairs, and he thought that it could be said he had done his share for the time being. • Referring to municipal affairs generally, Mr Hollings remarked that the Borough finances were in a very much better state than when he first took office. The northsrn approach question had been practicaally brought to a successful issue. Swimming baths for the ladies had, also, been established, through the Borough Council taking advantages of the very generous action of Dr W. H. Hosking. The drainage works and water works were both in excellent J working order, while the Borough I Engineer, whose services the Council generally were prepared to admit were of. an invaluable character, had been engaged for the past six months on an extended drainage scheme. To this scheme the Mayor and Council had given a good deal of time lor months past, and the scheme would no doubt, shortly be submitted to<the ratepayers. "I am glad to say," added Mr Hollings, "that my successor will find municipal affairs generally in a very satisfactory condition "
