GROUND COMMITTEE.
The Ground Committee reported as follows:—As doubts existed as to the suitabili'y of the proposed circle at I Solway for jumping events, hurdles were placed in a circle, in exactly the same position as those in the old showground. Mr W. Lett, who attended with his horse, negotiated the several jumps with ease, and the course laid out was considered by those present as most suitable. The relative positions of the produce hall, cattle yaras, sheep pens, horse boxes, etc., were decided upon- It was decided to spend the sum of i'2 10s in removing trees at the entrance of the Avenue, and also to find out the approximate cost per foot of extending the produce hall, not more than twenty-five feet in length.
With reference to the circle for > jumping events, the chairman said he was present when the trial was made, and he was quite satisfied with the rinc. It had been stated that the ring was not a success in Australia, but the Ground Committee had since been informed that the Australian rirj-rs were only five chains In dia> meter, whereas the ring at Solway would be eight chains m diameter. Mr Pilmer, who vas also present at the trials by special request, said the ring proposed would be an ideal one. In answer to a cuestion as to whether the ring would not be on the large size, Mr Pilmer said it was far better for parade purposes to have a large ring, and it was also better for the general public, who would be afforded a better opportunity of witnessing the various competitions. The report was adopted.
