FIRE IN CHURCH STREET.
HOUSE GUTTED
A fire occurred at 1J.5 a.m., this morning, in the premises owned and occupied by Mr Herbert Marsh, at Ihe lower ena of Church street. The fire was first seen by a member of the Age staff, who gave the alarm, but owing to intervening trees the fire was thought to be out of town. The occupants of the house, who escaped in their night-clothes, were awakened by Mr W. Cook, who lives next dnor, and woke up to find the house in flames. Shortly after the Fire Brigade arrived on the scene, and succeeded in arresting the flames. The fire had, however, travelled through most of the house, leaving it gutted. The Oi'igin of the fire is a mystery, but it is believed it started in the back of the premises. The building, which consisted of six rooms, was insured in the New Zealand Insurance Company (for which Mr J. D. Cruickshanks is the local agent) for £275, but there was no insurance on the furniture. Mr Marsh estimates his loss at 4SJSO over the insurance.
