CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE WOELD. ARNST v. WHELCH. WON BY ARNST BY THREE LENGTHS. By Telegraph—Press Association. AKAROA, April 4. The sculling race for the Championship of the"jWorJd between Dick Arnst, t.he present holder, and George Wh'=kh p of Akaroa, challenger, took place on the Akaroa Harbour, this afternoon, after being postponed from Saturday last on account of a bad sea. The weather was fine, but with a nasty "jobble" on the sea, which gave Whelch much trouble. There was some delay at the start, but the men finally got away together by mutual conse t. Whelch set out with a stroke of 42 to thminute, Arnst responding with 32. Whtlch rode ahead for a shot >.ia tance, bnt Arnst soon passeu rum and kept an ea.~y lead iro »i then to the finish, winning finally by three lengths. Arnst kept a slow, powerful stroke, which kept his boat moving through the water at a good speed. Whelch could not get going on account of the "jobble," but he put in some good spurts, and finished quite fresh. The time for the race was 2Jmin 50 3-ssec. Arnst leaves on Thursday for Australia to compete in the handicap event on the Parramatta river. From there he leaves for South Africa to meet Barry on the Zambesi river in August.
