THE FUTILITY OF STRIKES.
Received April 1, 10 a.m. SYDNEY, Aprli 1. Tne Trades Union Congress adopted a resolution emphatically protesting against Mr Wade's coercive Industrial Disputes Amendment Act of 1909, and pledging itself to make every effort to return Labour members at next election in sufficient number *c have the amended Act repealed and the Industrial Disputes ct itself amended so as to be suitable for the workers. A uother resolution carried was:— "lhat this congress favours obtaining its ideals and redressijg its grievances ty constitutional methods, and is of opinion t,hat strikes should only be resorted to when everv possible hope of conciliation has failed." Supporters of the motion urged that past experience had proved that it was futile to expect to redress grievances by a resort to strikes. The ballot box was the only channel through which it was possible to achieve Labour's ideals.
