CONFERENCE OF SHEARERS.
(Special to the Age). , WELLINGTON, March .30. The first annual conference of the Npw Zealand Federated Shearers' Industrial Union of Workers was opened in the Trades Hall, Cuba street, Wellington, on Tuesday last/the following delegates being present, representing the various provinces througnuut the Dominion:—President. Mr W. J. King; Timaru; General Secretary, pro tem, Mr Laracy; Wairarapa Delegates, Messrs A. McLeod, R. Mcßae, J. G Challis, E. W. Aobott; Marlborough, J. Tuwnsend; Canterbury, F. Waddell, J. Cooper, J. Heath, C. Johnston ;Otago, W. Job'istun, W. Allen. J. Mefcalfe; Hike's Bay, Hinare Hawkins; Gisborne, J. K. Morgan. Tne press were not admitted, but a sub-com-mittee were subsequently appointed to furnish the press with such information at they deem necessary. In opening the conference the President referred in feeling terms to the sad disappearance of the late General Secretary, Mr F. J, Uarcy, "The bk># caused by the loss of such a valuable officer." saidthe President, "woull be keenly felt, by not only toe Feqfcratkm, but by tne cause of Labour generally." The President, also, referred to the work of the past season, and the progress made by the Federation since its inception. The number of members on the roll' was •.considerably mare than double those of August last, when the Federation was, formed; Reference was also made to the books and accounts of the Feieratiun, which were all in perfect order, and went far to show the value of such an officer as the late General Secretary. The balancesheet for the period ending 31st January, 1910, was read and adopted, and showed the be, on a very sound footing. Mr M. Laracy, who has temporarily filled the position, was elected General Secretary, there being two applicants for the position. The order-paper contains many resolutions dealing closely with the pastoral and shearing industry, and Labour platform, and also relating to increases of pay to shed hands and cooks, and better conditions in connection with the accommodation of shearers, and other matters. The sitting is likely id extend over same three or four days to come.
