CARTERTON NEWS.
(Own Correspondent.) Wednesday. A valuable draught horse, belonging to ihe local -branch of the W.F - C.A , sustained a broken leg to-day through a kick from another animal and had to be destroyed. Carterton landowners, who have had to deal with that imported pest —Calitornian thistle—will no doubt be glad to hear that it has been successfully beaten in the struggle for existence by a farmer at Dromore, in the Canterbury district. His farm had gradually become well stocked with the weed, which had been deposited with the rubbish, where a threshing mill had been working. Fro.; there it rapidly sp-ead—a plot here and a plot there were about the farm. However, war was declared with an ordinary Duncan grubber, drawn by five horsps. Tines were mai*e nine inches wide, so that they overlapped and set about three inches underground. Grubbing was commenced early in November, and continued once a wee«c until the. end ot April. One season's work completely exterminated the pest. The patches operated, upon have not reapi eared for three years, so it seems that the thistle has at last met. its Waterloo—at least on one man's farm. i Mr G>(>. Armstrong, son r.f Mrs B. P Armstrong, of this town, leaves Weill' gton for Sydney on Friday, and *fitr visiting relatives there will leave on an extended tour to Eneland. At Sr. Mark's Church, yesterday afternoon, Miss Elsie King, daughter of Mr Edwin King, of Carterton, was married to Mr John Wratt, eldest son of Mr John Wratt, of Tauonui, Feilding. : .;
