TURF NOTES
' King's Prize, by The Possible— | Dazzle, a half-brother to California, J died at Awapuni from an internal | complaint on Monday. This will I prove to be rather a serious Joss to I T. Wilson, the owner-trainer, for all though King's Prize had been returned a winner on several occasions. it was eenerally considered that the beat of his form has pot been attained. The horse was engaged at the coming Canterbury meeting, and was reckoned to have a good chance of scoring. ,' H. Cairns will ride Tumut in the Great Easter, but it is not known what horseman will have the have the mount on Osiris in the Great Autumn Handicap. The well-known sportsman, F. Taucred, who for the past thirty years has been a leading spirit in New Zealand racing, Las sold his horses Penates and Laius, and for the meantimp, at leaat, has retired from the turf. Mr Tancred, whose health has not been good lately, was for many ye'HS * ' i'l-n of Clarevi'K whprf r-< farming
operations, and formed what was one of the be-t racing studs in New Zealand He ninny of the horses ho Hred, and Bt times figured high in the lFst of winning owners. In 1871 he purchased the thoroughbred stallion The Premier, and after coming to the Wairarapa secured Princess Mary, Ruby and Gossip. Later purchases included Gabble. The Spy and Odd Trick. Among those of his own breeding that he raced successfully may be mentioned Administrator, winner of the Island Bay and Marlborough Cups, anJ numerous other events, Consul, Wanganui Derby and Taranaki Derby and Rangitikei St. Leger; First Water, Wairarapa Cup and other races; Forester, a champion sprinter and weight carrier; Orator. Nelson Cup; King's Bowman, a big winner; and Senator, a fair performer. Probably the best horse bred by Mr Tancred was the little ' roan, Administrator, whose best performance was in 1885, when, carrying Bst lOlbs, he ran second to Fusilade 6st 71bs. The subject of this notice stood to Win £B,OOO if the son of The Premier bad prevailed. In recent years Mr Tancred, racing under the title of "Mr Barclay," won a number of races with Sardonyx and his star performer of late has been that good horse, Penates, who this week has been purchased by Mr R. Patterson, for 500 guineas. Last year an offer of 1,500 guineas was refused for Penates, and as he is perfectly sound and engaged in the Great Easter Handicap, he should prove a great -bargain. It will ever be acknowledged that Mr Tancred did good work in Wairarapa in years gone bj -in the improvempnt of our thoroughbred stock, and his many friends ici this district will wish him a speedy return to good health.
The acceptances received for the Wairarapa meeting, which opens on Saturday, are sufficiently numerous to provide good racing. The principal event, the Easter Handicap, will bring out eight performers, of practically *oeal class. A like number may contest the Nursery Handicap, and fifteen are noted for the Makahi Handicap. Air«™<? the , horses that have not been lately, but which are, expected to cqmpete, are Merrie Rose, . Magneto, Waiwareware' and Advantage, and their presenre «t the meeting will lend interest to, the sport, as making the issues more difficult to solve. The general arrangements in connection with the future are well forward, and as thi? will, be the last meeting to be held in the district for some months there should be large attendances. ; », ■
