Monday.

A cricket match was played between Mataikona and Tenui cricket clubs on the 19th inst. The match was the most interesting one played here for many years. Tenui won the toss, and went to the wicket, and made 103 for seven wickets and closed their innings. Mataikona, 78, were just got out in time to save a draw. O'Donoghue for Tenui, and Barton for Mataikona, gave a good display of both batting, fielding and bowling. The fielding, with the exception of these two, was a weak display, no doubt for the want of practice. Scores:— TENUI.

A large gathering of Maoris and Pakehas was held at Whakataki on the 18th inst., the occasion being the opening of a large meeting house recently built. The day, as far as weather was concerned, was perfect, which enabled people from all over the district to be present. There had not been a meeting of the the Hikaopapamui, Ngati Pihire, and Hereitipu tribes for forty years. The meeting was then held at Blue Gums. Mr W. Harvey's house now stands on the spot. Although these tribes have always been on friendly terms, care had to be exercised in those days, not to say anything that might be displeasing. In those days letters had ta be sent by what is called bush telegraph, but now that there is more settlement, mail carriers and telephones soon spread the news. In this instance the members of the tribes were called together in a few days, to enjoy one of the most pleasant days ever spent at Whakataki by Maoris and Pakehas alike. A large marquee was built for the dining room, which seated sixty people, and was filled several times. Ths large tables fairly staggered under the weight of delicacies, while the Maori maidens who were prettily dressed, waited on the huge crowd in a manner that did them credit, and everybody present spoke in high praise of their kindness and quick way of attending to the wants of the visitors. After dinner the afternoon was spent in dancing hakas and poi dances; the dancers were heartily cheered, each time. Mr H. Potangaroa deserves a special word of praise for the way in, which he managed the large meeting without a hitch, and, also, for his kind and thoughtful attention to the Pakehas. In the evening the meeting house was used for a ball room, the acetylene gas was lit, and the pretty dresses worn by the Maori ladies in the bright light made a brilliant picture. A photo of the whole crowd was taken by Mr H. Potangaroa, and will appear in one of the weekly papers shortly. The Pakehas wish to tender the Maoris their heartiest thanks for their unlimited kindness and warm hospitality. The pleasant afternoon spent at the Pah will long be remembered.
