HOCKEY.

Added interest is being manifested ] in hockey circles in Waira'r«pa this season. Two new cl-ib have formed in Masterton, and intend to enter t'iree extra teams for the championship fixtures, while Feathcrston hockey enthusiasts hope to he represented thisyear by a senior and junitf team. The teams that have definitely decided to enter for the senior championship from Masterton are Knox, Excelsior, and Post ana Telegraph, while S. Matthews A and B and Excelsior A and B will be the local contestants for the Booth Cup. Knox, , last year's winners, will not be re- | presented in the junior championship. Saturday hockey should get a start udging by the enthusiasm displayed by a few players in Masterton. If a competition could be started, and I have good reason for believing that if three or four teams were to express their willingness to enter, the Wairarapa Association would run a competition for them, Post and Telegraph and S. Matthew's have teams formed, while hockey enthusiasts at Dalefield have expressed their willingness to start a team if there was a competition on Saturday. There is also some talk of the Bank and Law Clerks forming an eJeve >, in which case there would be ample competition. It is to be hoped that a Hockey Referees' Association will be formed this year, There are a number of old players, who no doubt would be willing to take a game on an afternoon, if approached. Bather a good project towards raising of the £SO guarantee for the English team would ba a combined hockey sports and tournament in Masterton on the same lines as that run by the Hawke's Bay Association. The hurdle of £lO from every club that plays a senior team does not appear to meet with the general approval of players in Masterton. In the instance of new clubs the extra task of getting together £lO will be a big burden. I understand that the j Carterton Club have already collected thair amount.
