FARE WELLING A CITIZEN.

PRESENTATION TO MR JAS. BROWN. BY CARTERTON BUSINESS PEOPLE. (Own Correspondent). There was a representative gathering of prominent business people and citizens in the Carterton Borough Council Chambers, yesterday afternoon, Mr Frank Feist occupying the chair. The Chairman said the object of the gathering was to meet one who had recently taken up his residence in Masterton after a business career in Carterton extending over many years—he alluded to Mr James Brown, who was present by invitation. The Chairman said he bad known Mr Brown for many years as one who had always worked earnestly for the advancement of the town. It came as a surprise to most people to find that Mr Brown had given up his residence with them, and it was decided amongst the townspeople that they must not let him go without some expression of the goodwill they felt towards him and his family. He was sure/he expressed the feeling of the meeting when he said he regretted their departure from the town. (Applause). Mr J. Bailey eaid he had known Mr Brown for the past sixteen years, and had always found it a pleasure to do business with him. When he (the speaker) was Mayor of the town he had been glad of the advice of Mr Brown, and when he acted on it found he was never astray. Mr Brown had been twice Mavor of Carterton, and it was during his term that important public works were put through. He had a very pleasant duty to perform on behalf of the citizens. With a desire to know that Mr Brown would have the means to sit- at ease at his home they had brought him an easy chair, and he beerged Mr Brown's acceptance of the same with the hearty good wishes of th 3 donors that he would have many years to enjoy its comforts. (Applause).

Mr C. H. Cormack said he was very glad of the opportunity of testifying to the good work Mr Brown had done in Carterton. He had known him for some seventeen years, and had been connected with him in business matters. He had always found him straightforward, prompt and reliable in his dealings. Mr Brown had done a great deal to benefit the district in promoting local industries, notably the Brick and Tila Company, which was a flourishing concern. (Applause). Mr J. Moncrieff spoke of what Mr Brown had-done in furthering the dairy industry, al?o, of the work he had accomplished as a Councilbr and as Mayor. When tenders were called for drainage work for the town, and they all proved too high, Mr Brown and the Co-neil leaded nn doing the work by rinv labour, with successful results (Applause). Mr W. F. Roydhouse and Mr Mansfield also spoke in eulogistic terms of the services Mr Brown had rendered Carterton, and expressed regret at his departure. Mr Brown, on rising to resoond. was heartily applauded. He said on looking round at the pleasant face 3 before him he could not imagine tham saying unkind things. He only hoped he had earned one tithe of the praise they had beatowed upon him. He and his family had many friends in Carterton, and they regretted having to leave them. He referred to the progress Masterton had made in the past few years, yet he thought if people could only be content they could make a g*x>d living more easily in Carterton than Masterton. He considered while in Cartert m he had done no more than his dutv. Ele thanked them for their very kind wishes, and . i the ceremony closed amidst applause.
