CANADA'S SOLDIERS.
COMING VISIT OF GENERAL FRENCH. Received March 16, 8.40 a.m. OTTAWA, March 15. In the Canadian House of Commons, the Hon. Sir F. W. Borden, Minister for Militia and Defence, said that the coming visit of MajorGeneral G. A. French would be semiofficial. There would be no special mobilisation, but every facility would be given to the General to see the militia. In the House of Commons a few days ago, during the debate on the Army Estimates, the Secretary for War, the Right Hon. R. B. Haldane, said he hoped that Field-Marshal Lord Kitchener's visit to Australasia would bear practical fruit. He addei that Major-General Sir G. A. French was going on» a similar mission to Canada. General French was Inspector of Artillery in Canada for some time, and later commanded the North-West Mounted Holice. From 1893 to 1891 he was Commandant of the Queensland Forces, and for his services received the thanks of both Houses of Parliament. After holding a command in Bombay, he was MajorGeneral commanding the New South Wales Forces for six years (from 1893 to 1902). In 1902 he retired on lull pay.
