SPORTING.

RACING.

TURF NOTES. I (By "Zetland.") On Saturday morning the Opaki rourse was enveloped in a heavy mist up to seven o'clock, consequently the work on tracks was of an unimportant nature. All the galloping was dune on the plough, which was in fine order, despite the previous day's rain. Among the horses worked were Pukewai, oaelic, Campain, j Kiltie Lass. Lady Volley, Aberration, Afterthought, Embrocation, Rose j Herald. Merrie Rose, Over Rate, Critic, and Kalypso. Usiris and j Riflemaid ran a mile at a sound pace, and finished together. The first named appears to be none the worse < for his racing at Wanganui, while Riflemaid has commenced to fine down aomewhat. The first visiting horses to arrive to take part in the Masterton meeting are the Aucklanders, Aimwell and Maykoft". They are located at J. Cress', Lansdowne stable, and are in good racing condition. Merrie Land, who was hurt racing atTauherenikau on New Year's Day, will be among the starters at Opaki thib week, and being nicely treated in the weights is expected to run prominently.

Considerable interest is sure to be evinced m the running of Naumai in the March Handica at the Masterton meeting. The conqueror gelding is very brilliant over five furlongs even with big weights but the distance on Thursday will be a furlong further, and with lOst lib he is undoubtedly set a very severe task. Those who have noticed Naumai stop qickly at the finish of some of his five furlongs races do not favour his chance in theevent above mentioned, while others contend that as he has never been in such tip-top condition he will run out the full distance The Porirua trainer, J. Prosser, will have a fine team of eight racing at the Masterton meeting. His various horses are sure to have plenty of followers. Sir Lethe, who was somewhat big in condition when he raced at Woodville last month, is now improving, and may show something like his [ proper dash at Otaki this week. I The Opaki horses, Osiris and Tumut, have been accepted for in the Great Autumn and Easter Handicaps, and it is expected that both will go to the post
