Hatch claims the distinction of having ridden the last three winners of the Jackson Stakes at Wanganui. Armlet's weight in the Great Easter Handicap is now 9.13. Bobrikoff and Downfall are doing good work in Australia. Mr T. H. Lowry leaves for the other side next week in order to see his horses run at the Easter meeting of the Australian Jockey Club. The Masterton meeting, which opens on Thursday next, promises to be a decided success. The available stable accommodation has already been ordered, the racing tracks are in splendid, order, and the general arrangements 'in connection with''.the' fixture are well up-to-date. The catering will be ucdtr the super-
visum ct Mr J. ?hout, so satisfaction to patrons is assured. 'lhe Wairarapa horses engaged at the Feilding meeting are Gold lsird, Riflemaid, Epsom Downs, Embrocation and Afterthought. Curator, who won the Makirikiri Hack Handicap, at Dannevirke, this week, carrying 7.11, is engaged in the March Handicap at the Masterton meeting, his weight being 6.7. He is liable to be re-handicapped up to the limit of lOlbs, but this would only brine his weight to 7.3. His time for the above-mentioned race was lmin 15sec. A mattter well worth the consideration of racing clubs is that of general totalisator management. Now that bookmakers are licensed to ply their calling on racecourses they naturally enter into direct competition with the legalised machine. The public thus have the option of patronising the layers of the odds or the totalisator. and the latter is run on Ihe ve.y be.t lines as re-
gards manage'rn? . t turnover is sure to suffer. Tiie quick delivery of tickets should he aimed at, but what is probably of even mure importance is that of paying out. At a number of country meetings the -arrangements in this connection ar? totally inadequate, and at times only two clerks are engaged in paying out to some hundreds of investors. The latter thus lose considerable time in securing their dividends, and many resent this by patronising the bookmaker, whose paying out arrangements are better facilitated.
