POULTRY FARMING.
I There is evidence that poultry farm- ! ing in the Wairarapa will shortly re- ' celve a. considerable impetus, and due largely to Mr J. B. Merrett, editor of | the "Poultry Journal," having creati ed a good deal of enthusiasm among local poultry farmers. The leader of any movement, which is going toresuit successfully, must have a know- | ledge of his subject, enthusiasm and . energy. These three essential quali--1 fixations Mr Merrett appears to possess in a large measure. It has been demonstrated again and again that poultry faiming conducted on sclen- • tific lines is very profitable, but unscientifically carried on there is usually a surprising loss. Consequently when it is possible to acquire scientific knowledge of the industry at, practically, nu expense those who are engaged in it should lose no opportunity both of improving their knowledge and cooperating with one another for mutual advantage. Co-operation is the spirit of the day, because by that system the individual can best promote his own interests as well as those of the whole community. This evening local poultry farmers propose to establish a'Wairarapa egg circle, a meeting to which there will be neither charge for admission, nor collection taken j up, having been convened. The proposed rules were published in our issue of yesterday, and it is plain that the objects of the poultry farmers is to secure a better price for their eggs, borne discussion has taken place recently on the price of eggs, and though the formation of an egg circle may assist generally so far as the marketing of eggs is concerned it is scarcely likely that it will be able to regulate the market price. To do this it would have to develop into something approaching a trust, and its operations would have to be conducted accordingly. The law of supply and demand will, of course, largely control the price, and merchants handling poultry farmers' supplies will naturally look to make : a fair margin of profit, to which ( they are justly entitled.
