LIFEBELTS WASHED ASHORE.
THE MYSTERY DEEPENS. By Telegarph—Presa Association. CHRISTCHUKCH, Ferbeuary 27. The mystery attaching to the lifebelts washed upon the beach at New Brighton is deepening. This morning a boy found two vests washed up, both almoat buttonless, as though they had been chafed by lifebePs. Anions other flotsams is a small box with leather hinge*, branded "C.C.8." in capitals over ''Beecroft."
Mr Zohrab, of the Wellington Steam Ferries Company, informed a press representative to-day that the lifebelts (thirty in number, the Press Association reports) could not have belonged to the Duco, as she carried unly sixteen. At oie time there were 400 on board, but these had been removed when the vessel was taken off the harbour run. The crew of the Duco did not include a man named ' • Beecroft," or any one of a similar name.
