TOUR OF THE AUSTRALIANS. MATCH WITH CANTERBURY. HOME TEAM LEADS ON FIRST INNINGS. By Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHUKCH, February 27. The match Australians v. Canterbury was resumed yesterday, in fine weather, and in the presence of a large attendance of spectators. The previous day's "not outs," Boxshall and Sandman, faced Whitty and Armstrong. Boxshall added two to his previous score, then Sandman went out l.b.w. to Armstrong, and the innings closed for 321. The Australians opened with Bards* ley and Mayne, to the bowling of Bennett and Carlton. Mayne opened out to Carlton, and was clean bow-led;—l3—l-11. Simpson followed, and was clean bowled by Bennett. —14—2—l. Smith joined Bardsley, and 50 went up as a result of 35 minutes play. Runs continued to come freely. Sandman replaced Bennett, and Reese relieved Carlton. Shortly after Bardsley was caught by Sandman off Reese.—Bo—3—3s.
Armstrong followed, and 100 went up for 55 minutes' play. Smith was beaten by a leg break from Sandman, •—102—4—49. Kellaway followed, and after the luncheon interval Bennett replaced Reese, and Sandamn clean bowled Armstrong.—l2l—s—l7. Hopkins the next man in, was beaten by Bennett.—l22—6—l. Facy followed, and was soon run out-132—7—5. Dodds went in, and was beaten by Sandman after making 12. —l6l-8-12. Emery filled the gap, and runs came slowly. Bowling changes were made, but 200 was posted for two and a quarter hours' play, runs coming faster. Rain then started to fall from the South-west. Kellaway, pokiDg one up at point, Ridl«y brought off an easy catchi — 217—9-34.
Whitty followed, and was clean bowled by Bennett. The innings closed for 240, and with a lend of 81 Canterbury commenced their second innings with Patrick and Lusk, Whitty and Armstrong bowling. Patrick, after some good hitting, lifted one nearly to the boundary, where Kellaway brought off a good catch.—39—l—22. W. CarltoD followed, Kellaway and Emery replaced the other two bowlers, Lusk shortly afterards being clean bowled by the latter. 65—2—35. Sims was next. Carlton was then j clean bowled by Emery.—74—3—6. Reese followed, Simpson and Facy | relieving Kellaway and' Emery, and 100 was posted for one and a quarter hours' play. Both batsmen scored fast.
