WOODVILLE RACES.

There was glorious weather for the opening day of the WoodviJle District Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting, a fine attendance, and interesting and exciting finishes. The sum of £6,902 was put through the totali«ator, and nine bookmakers did business, seven inside and two outside. The results

are: — Maiden Plate, six furlongs, —H. Parana's Rongojnai I, Nelius 2, Howlur 8, Scratched—Golden Bell. Ktlllgorrlfci sed for nearly the whole distance, and won comfortably by a length and a half. Time, Imin 15 3-ssec.

Hack Hurdles, one mile and threequariers. VV. J. Douglas' Maku 1, Gold Bird 2, Hirnitangi 3. Scratched —Waipunehu, Longner, Hoanga. Hirnitangi and Cold Bird had charge of the field until the straight was entered, when Maku was taken to the front. This horse struck the last hurdle heavily, but his rider, Jerry O'Connell, made a wonderful recovery, and was able to keep Maku on is legs, and won comfortably by a couple of lengths. Time, 3min 21 4-ssec.

Whariti Hack, seven furlongs. —Jas. Macara's Skye l, Succession 2, First Consu 1 3. the straight Skye was let out, and won easily by three lengths. Time, lmin 30sec.

Woodville Cup, one mile and a quarter.—E. Kemp's Parable 1, Hon. Ormond's Woodhey 2, R. Brough's Te Puia 3. Also started—Aberration, Kopu, Waitapu, Goodwin Park, No Trumps, Chauvelin, Hilarian. This was a splendid race; the light weights got away with a lead, which they maintained for half the distance. W oodhey here made an effort, but could not head the leaders. Te Puia and Parable were first into the straight, and Woodhey again put in a claim. but Parable won by half a length under severe punishment. Time, 2min Bsee; County Hack, six furlongs.—A. Peter's Moree l r Dervish 2, Leahora 3. Scratched —Toanga, Faunus, Bay Paul, Embrocation. Won easily by a length. Time, lmin lssec. President's Handicap.—M. T. McGrath's Osiris 1, Longner 2, Miss Advance 3. A great race. Won by half a length. Time, lmin 30 3-ssec„ Victoria Hack, one mile. —Limmer and McKay's Amato 1, Afterthought 2, Royal Maid 3. Scratched.—Hilarian, Captain Bell, Paul, Envoy. Won by a length. Time, lmin 44sec. Telephone Handicap, five furlongs. Wire Pewene's Naumai 1,. Ballarat 2, Advantage 3. Scratched—Longner Clemora, Liza, Thera. The race was an absolute gift to Naumai. The large field gave a lot of trouble at the post. Naumai was favoured with a flying start. Before half the distance was covered he was fifty yards ahead of the field, and won by ten lengths. Time, lmin lsec.

NOTES ON THE RAGING

Thee attendance of the public was very satisfactory, and the course in splendid order.l'he opening event, the Maiden Plate, went to an outsider, in Rongomai, and its supporters were rewarded with a splendid price. A nice lot of jumpers contested the Hack Hurdles, and victory went to Maku, who was turned out in fine order by Trainer Munn. Gold Bird, | whc jumps slowly, but will improve with experience, filled second place. '• , The Whariti , ,Hack Handicap brought out a good field, and the Masterton ownod Skye managed to gain the judge's verdict. Mr Macara'a Saracen mare bas oeen un-

fortunate on several occasions, and although the mare was not spiritedly backed by the public the win was a

popular one. Another surprise was sprung on the public in the Cup, the Merriwee mare Parable winning from the well backed Woodhey. Moree, who lor some time has been credited with being speedy, [ed for the County Hack, the top weight, Dervish, running a good race, and filling second place. Osiris, despite his Welter Weight of lOst 51b. won the President's Handicap like a racehorse. M. McGrath has the chestnut in fine condition, just HOW. The Masterton owned afterthought Who had been showing improved track form, recently ran second in the Victoria Hack the winner turning up in Amato. The day's racing was concluded with tfte Telephone Handicap, of five furlongs, the brilliant Naumai, 9stllib, defeati x Ballarat, and a useful lot of sprint: rs.

The bookmakers had a really good day, consequent on tfrfe downfall of several favourites.

Gladbrook Handicap, 7 furlongs— Luperin, 7.9, 1; Ideate, 8.11, 2: Taieri, 7,7, 3. Also started —Guianforte, Inchbonriy, Fulmar, Lady de Vere, Redward, Stepaside. Won by four lengths. Time, Imin 30sec. Champagne Stakes, 6 furlongsFormless, i ; Countermine, 9.0, 2; Tenterhook, 9.0, 3. Also started— Kora, Odessa, Buff, Gauntlet, Mumura. Won by a length. Time, Imin 17 l-ssec.

Dunedin Cup, 1£ mile—Oiyoi, 9.0, 1; Ingona, 8.5, 2; Tikitere, 7.8, 3. Also started —Husbandman 9.7. Effort 8.7, Office Girl 7.5, Outlander 7.2, Astrakhan 7,2, Cronstadt 7.1. From a good start Outlander went to the front, and led to the six furlong post, after which Tikitere went to the front. After a good finish Oiyoi beat Ingona by a neck. Time, 2min 35sec,

Trial Plate, 6 furlongs—Zemlia, 7.11, 1; Windgun, 7.1, 2; Adage, 8.0; 8. Also started —Merry Weather, 8.4, Peak 8.4,' Vandirk 8.4, Vesper Bell 7.11. Won by a head. Time, lmin 18 4-ssec.

Stewards' Welter, 7 furlongs— Iranui, 9.11, 1; Warsaw, 9.5, 2; Sharpshooter, 10.6, 3. Also started —Cuiroseia, White Cockade, Qbsono, Zetland, Waipu, Snos, Gold Braid, Red and Black, Feodora. Won by half a length. Time, lmin 29 l-ssec.
