TURF NOTES.

It is expected that Sir George Clifford will be represented at the Wanganui meeting by Taskmaster and Broadsword.
Cymbriform has been purchased by W. J. Taggart, of Christchurch, and will be taken to Australia and offered for sale.
Effort and Sea Queen will represent J. W. Lowe's trentham stable at the Dunedin Cup fixture. On Saturday mormne a number of horses executed satisfactory tasks at the Opaki course. Afterthought finished in front of Euroclydon over a mile, and Osiris was rather better than Aberration over a similar distance. Sunbonnet, Riflemaid and Thera ran five furlongs, and finished in that order. Merrie Rose galloped a mila in good style, and Rose Herald and Merrie Emerald went six furlongs separately. Vite ran freely over half a mile, while Critic and Kiltie Lass were together in a nicely run five furlongs. Pukewai, Campaign and Skye did slow work, and Tumut and First Consul were out, but not worked.
Sir George McLean, the well-known Dunedin sportsman, has decided to retire from the turf. His stables at Wingatui have already been disposed of, and his horses will be sold immedately after the Dunedin meeting. The Hon. G. McLean entered upon his turf career in 1880, so he has been associatd with the sport for thirty years. His first horse was Voltigeur, and id 1831 he started racing in co-partnership with Sir Hercules Robinson, at that time Governor of New Zealand. They imported from Australia Lady Emma, Legardemain, and Gitana, the Zetland spots, which had previously been conspicuous on New South Wales and Victorian racecourses during Sir Hercules' term as Governor of the first named colony, being soon carried in New Zealand. Lady Emma won the Great Autumn and Easter Handicap in 1881, the Dunedin Cup, J. (3. Handicap, and Forbury Handicap in 1882, and Legerdemain were also returned as winner of several events. In 1883 Lady Emma won the Forbury Handicap, and in 1884 the Provincial Handicap, Dunedin Cup and D.J.C. Handicap, About, twentyfive years ago the subject of this notice started the Warrington stud, and has bred quite a number of firstclass horses, some of which he raced, while others were sold and performed for numerous leading sportsmen. The principal stud horses were Thunderbolt, Ruberzah!, Clair and Lord Rosslyn, and among the brood mares were Lady Emma, Lady Gertrude, Mountain Lily., jLegerdemaia, Lady Evelyn, Mist and Mistral Among the racehorses bred at the Warrington stud may be mentioned Euroclydon, Blazer, Blizzard, Vladimir, Pampero, Lady Evelyn, Dilemma and Maremma. For the past twentyfive years he has been President of the Dunedin Jockey Club, and generally represents his club at the Racing Conference Two years ago he imported from England the St. Simon horse, Sarto, a very valuable addition to the thoroughbreds of the Dominion.
