SUBORNATION OF WITNESSES.

MELBOURNE, February 19
Patrick Hill, an ex-postal employee, was committed for trial on a charge of subornation of witnesses in the Ronald-Harper libel case. Somi of the witnesses deposed that Hill, who claimed to be acting on behalf of Harper, offered them considerable sums and promised them psrmanant situations if they would give evidence against Ronald.
In some instances witnesses deposed that, they had received similar promises from young Harper. They alleged that the evidence they gave in the libel action wad manufactured and false. Hill told one witness that .he got £250 from Harper for securing witnesses.

Mr J. X. Merriman, the Cape rramiier, in a speech at Malmssbury, Cape Colony, said the Pro.ressives ■ had one object—to make, the money party dominant and keep the people under.
He believed the South African Party was preventing a recrudescence of racialist adding that if a party -Was conducted on racial lines it -would b> doomed to extinction.
