THE LATE KARA TE HUKI.

The funeral of the late Kara Te Huki took place at Taueru on Sunday last. During the week streams of relatives, ani friends arrived from different parts, Hawke's Bay being strongly represented, besides different parts of Wairarapa and Picton, to pay the last respects to their relative and friend. The pall-bearers were:—On the right-hand aide, Mr R. F. R. Beetham, Mr H. H. Wardell, Mr 0. Beetham, MrN. Beetham; of the left, Mr Pita Te Atahikoia, Mr Turanca M. Rangitakaiwaho, Mr Taiawhio le Tau, Mr Tuahine Renata The chief mourners were: —Tuhua Te Huki (only son of deceased), Hori Ts Huki (father of deceased), Mr H. 11. Beetham (oldest pakeha friend of Te Huki family), behind them Wainohu Te Huki (brother), Mrs Okeroa Paira (niece), Kani Te Huki (nephew), Mrs Morehu Turoa (cousin), then followed other relatives and friends. The funeral was the largest ever seen at Taureu.
Rev. Teri Paerafea conducted an impressive service at the meeting house, and afterwards at the graveside. On behalf of the deceased's son, an invitation was extended to the Europeans present to tea, when Mr Walnohu Te Huki thanked the pakehas for attending the funeral of his late brother, and for the. kind sympathy shown by all present in their sorrow. After tea, one of the pakeha triends stood up and thanked the Te Huki family for their hospitality, and assured them 'Hut-they deeply deplored the sad acci.i it that caused the death of their de«c friend who was buried that day. Later on in the evening speeches were made by Mohi Te Atwi'ukoia (Hawke's Bay), Hami Potanyoroa v East Coast), Mmiwa Te Rangi (Martinborough), Karaitiana Wirihana (Dannevirke), Purakau Maika (Carterton), T. Renata (Hawke's Bay), Rev. Ten Paerata (Gladstone), Mrs Morehu Turoa (Hawke's Bay), the return speeches being made by Hori Te Huki, Mrs Hiwa Paku, Wainohu Te Huki and Tioi Waaka. Yesterday a number of Hwke's Bay visitors lett for their homes, but a large number intend going to Te Wharau to witness the unveiling of a memorial stone to the late Wi Whatakorari.
